In Math 10 class we recently completed a math/art project. Students created art out of mathematical equations using the graphing calculator software Desmos. I got this project idea from Erica last year (thank you Erica!) and continued it again this year because it’s a lot of fun! Here are a couple of outstanding artworks, the electric guitar by Joshua and the eye by Mick:
On the left side you can see (some of) the equations that the students crafted. The graphical rendering of these functions is shown on the right-hand side. With the right functions (and the use of inequalities for shaded regions) it is possible to create very compelling art!
Although the goal of this project was to gain practice with linear functions, many students went above and beyond by including quadratic functions, circles, and more. Well done, students!
Finally, a general update on the course: we are now winding down our first half of Math 10. There will be one more quiz next week, and then we’ll review the course up to now. Next month after report cards, Brian and I will swap roles, with Brian leading the class overall and me leading the weekly optional enrichment sessions.
