At BRIC, researchers develop and test technologies that convert biomass, such as wood waste, into biofuel and other renewable products. BRDF is a biomass energy plant on the UBC campus that uses clean wood waste to generate heat and energy for campus buildings.

In class, we explored energy transformation ( some students even built generators capable of lighting one or several LEDs) and read sections of the Canada Energy Fact Book 2025–2026. This trip provided students with an excellent opportunity to see how biomass can be used as a lower-carbon energy source in real-world applications.

I personally enjoyed this trip because it was not only about learning chemistry or engineering concepts. When scientific work and real-life applications are vividly presented in front of us, we gain a more concrete understanding of why we learn these subjects and how the knowledge can be applied in the real world. I would like to share a few highlights from the trip.

At BRIC, Grade 10 parent Lior noticed a laboratory journal and encouraged students to take a closer look, emphasizing the importance of documenting and staying organized in work.

I was glad to see that students who are usually the most adventurous in the VISST lab were the ones asking questions about safety :D. At that moment, I realized they deserve more trust.

In the control centre, Jason Rako, Chief Engineer at BRDF, shared what it is like to work as an engineer at the facility, including his 12-hour shifts, long weekends, and the pathway that led him into engineering.

This trip allowed students to see technologies designed to reduce carbon emissions and slow global warming, while also giving them insight into the daily work and responsibilities of chemical engineers.

Thank you to BRIC and BRDF for organizing the tour, and to Joshua, Jason, Jun, Alex, and Jimmy for their excellent explanations and engaging guidance throughout the visit. Their sense of humour made the experience especially enjoyable.

The grade 8 students completed a Youth Environmental Stewardship project where they chose an environmental issue they cared about and planned a project to raise awareness and take action to address this issue. This project is adapted from a species at risk outreach program I taught when I worked with Sea Smart (now part of The Starfish Canada). The students worked on this for a month and I was impressed by how they used the skills they learned this past year to make stickers, brochures, and badges, create websites, and go out to talk to people and raise funds for charities.

Here are the projects the students worked on:

1. Battery Drive (reducing deep sea mining)

Deep sea mining negatively affects ocean wildlife. To avoid excessive deep sea mining, we can recycle batteries to reuse those components that would otherwise need to be mined. The group gathered over 500 used batteries to ensure they were properly recycled.

2. Reducing AI use for climate change

AI uses a lot of energy, which creates a lot of greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to climate change. Polar bears are a symbol of the impact of climate change, and they will be extinct in a century if we do not take action.

The students created a brochure and set up a table outside Indigo to raise $153 in donations for Polar Bear International by giving out anti-AI polar bear stickers and badges. They also received a thank you email from the organization.

3. Frog Calendar

Frog populations in BC are declining because of various environmental issues, including toxic chemicals such as pesticides getting into waterways. The students made a calendar to spread awareness about this issue and actions people can take to help protect these vulnerable (and very cute) animals.

You can download the calendar HERE and the students may continue to sell hard copies at future VISST markets. The students are raising money for the Fraser Valley Conservancy’s Precious Frog Program.

4. Protecting Ocean Biodiversity

There are around 1500 species at risk in the ocean. The students are raising awareness about ocean pollution and how ocean biodiversity is being destroyed.

5. Protecting the Great Barrier Reef

Climate change is impacting coral reefs, and it’s predicted that by 2050, 90% of coral will disappear. The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef in the world. The students set up a table at Douglas Park with their hand-drawn poster and raised $171 for The Great Barrier Reef Foundation.

6. Supporting better farming practices

A lot of farming industries cause excessive suffering to farm animals. The students are raising awareness about the meat industry, suggesting alternative companies that promote cruelty-free meat and plant-based meat. The students’ website and instagram page, and they suggest looking at their list of ‘meat companies to buy from’ list that include some more ethical companies and plant-based options.

It makes me hopeful to see our youth taking action to protect the environment and some students talking about how this project has impacted them and their families and how they will behave moving forward. I think we need bigger systemic changes, but I do believe that making changes in our own lives makes us more likely to align ourselves with environmental values over time and be more open to the bigger changes we need to drive change.

Today, the Sun Run is a major community event welcoming everyone from elite athletes to first-time racers. The course starts at Georgia and Burrard, winds through the West End, past English Bay, across the Burrard Bridge, through Mount Pleasant and Kitsilano, past Science World, and finishes at BC Place.

What we love most: the community spirit, the bands and choirs lining the route, the personal challenge, and the fun energy — where else do you see a giant hotdog racing an inflatable dinosaur?

Despite the name, the Sun Run isn’t always sunny. This year, though, it lived up to its billing — a beautiful morning, one of the first real spring days of the season.

This year was extra special because the VISST community came together to form its first Sun Run Youth Team. The Oasis Youth Team Challenge is a dedicated category encouraging physical activity among young people. To qualify, teams need at least 14 members with more youth than adults. Registration started slowly and the outcome was uncertain right up until the deadline — but the VISST community came through, and we finished with a spirited team of 20 students and parents.

In the weeks before the race, student participants met at school for 9 am training runs — a great chance to spend time together outside of class. One session took the group along some abandoned train tracks on Granville Island. As it turned out, the Sun Run course runs right beside those same overgrown tracks — a fun surprise on race day.

Coordinating a meet-up spot on race day was its own adventure. We gathered on a small lawn near Burrard Station for a team photo — then everyone scattered into the crowd to find their place on the start line. We spotted familiar faces throughout the race, though not always for long (two people in our group disappeared around the very first corner).

After the finish, groups of us explored the food tables and vendor booths inside BC Place and enjoyed the live band — including Harlan’s uncle on drums!

The Sun Run organizers generously gifted our team a pair of Skullcandy earbuds. We put all student participants’ names into a draw, and Hannah (Grade 8) was the lucky winner!

We had a fantastic time, and many team members are already looking forward to next year. We’d love to see even more of you out there next year! Congratulations to everyone who ran!

A couple of weeks ago, students learned how to add booleans to their models to accommodate inserts such as a USB and a clicky MX Keyboard Key. This macaron is comprised of 4 parts, three of which are 3D printed, and hidden inside is an MX key to allow the pieces to spring up after being pressed.

Models involving inserts can definitely be a challenge at times and require lots of prototyping to ensure the finished product slots in just fine.

Thanh Out of Office

Thanh will be out of town from May 15th until June 8th. Lab interns will be available to assist with minor repairs and answer design questions in her absence.

The newsletters will also be on hiatus until June 15th.

Lab Reset and Reorganizing

Ahead of Thanh’s absence, the Maker Lab will be undergoing a rearrangement to accommodate future tools, designate adequate workspaces, provide better access to supplies and resources, and to hopefully improve the room atmosphere.

This is happening on the morning of Wednesday May 13th and will likely run through lunch. The lab and the tools will be considered inaccessible and unavailable to students during that time, and makers with ongoing projects should plan accordingly.

We can’t wait to show VISST friends and families our improved Maker Lab in the near future!

Slot Tests

Got 3D models you want to slot together but not sure if they will fit right? Before printing the model at the intended full scale, try a squished version to see if the slots are the right 2d dimensions.

An even better approach would actually be to extract just the insert portion using Blender to reduce even more wasted materials in your tests.

Wet Sanding and Heat Smoothing

When sanding your model, you might notice quite a bit of white powdering accumulating. Those particles are microplastics from the PLA being sanded down and they are clinging to the tiny crevices between your printing layers.

A method other 3D Printing artists have adopted is to wet their sandpaper and model beforehand to help reduce the amount of PLA microplastics flying around and therefore lessen the appearance of a white power coating in your models.

For models that still have significant undesirable ridge lines, one can also attempt to reheat the PLA using a Heat Gun to smooth some of the print off. This is not recommended for small prints with fine details at it can greatly distort and warp your prints if you aim the heat gun at it for too long.

This fun little decorative stand is available for free, along with many other Star Wars related projects, in xTool studio! While projects that involve interlocking with each other have quite a bit of size limitations to ensure they can still interlock correctly, projects that are just simply glued layers can be lasered at any size desired.

This was a combination of a simple interlock as well as a layered project. The backing and base were laser cut with black acrylic while the text is cut with white acrylic. To help with the alignment of the lettering, the letters were actually lightly etched onto the black acrylic so that way there are guidelines as to were to place the white acrylic.

Template etching and or creating jigs is a great way to ensure things line up the way you want them to.

Lab Survey Conducted

Over the past week, VISST students were invited to complete a feedback survey to provide insight on how they currently feel about the lab and how we could guide its growth for the future. While metrics are collected on a weekly basis, student input is very valuable to ensure that the space is properly curated for them.

From that survey, we have compiled a State of the Union for students to read for a sense of how the feedback went and what our next steps are.

While we won’t be linking the student-only document here, we wanted to recap and share some of the key points.

The overall sense is that students love having access to the lab and enjoy being able to learn about the tools and use them by themselves - something not actually available at many other schools.

Despite tidiness being a pain point with so many different projects going on all the time, students have found the lab to be a very welcoming and inspiring space to be in.

Workshop interest and attendance has greatly increased compared to last year, and the students have found them to be insightful and fascinating. There has been an appreciation of offering elective project and skills based workshops beyond the tool safety orientations.

Using their feedback responses, we’ll continue to shape the maker lab into the ideal fabrication space for the students of VISST and continue to provide a space to make.

Tiny Bases Requires Brims

Very small 3D models should always be printed with a brim and not just a skirt. The brim will provide additional surface grip so it is likely to topple over or slide off the build plate during the printing process. This does not apply to coins as those are generally flat and won’t experience toppling issues.

Preheat or Control Temps First

Before running your prints, it is recommended to either pre-heat the printers using the designated functions, or manually control the nozzle and plate temperatures.

It has been observed that adjusting the temps on the Ender after launching a print may cause some file reading issues where it suddenly switches to a different file. To avoid that bug, try manually heating things up before selecting your file.

Bringing this team to life under a very short timespan was never going to be easy, but no one could have predicted the ways in which our team grew together and had a fantastic time at the tournament, hopefully paving the way for many future sports teams at VISST to come.

Preparation:

Having only confirmed our team two weeks before the event, Sarah and Paloma organized our two team practices, in which we ran drills, practiced plays, and grew in our roles as cutters or handlers. Even in 3 short hours of practice time, we learned so much about our strengths and weaknesses, experimented with different line combinations, and started to gain confidence and chemistry. Some students also organized meetups outside of school hours for extra practice and drilling.

Tournament Day

On the day of the tournament, students and staff met at Empire Fields, near the PNE. We proudly donned our jerseys with numbers hand-pressed by Sarah; there was immediately a sense that we were not only playing ultimate, but also representing VISST to the greater community.

When we arrived and saw the other teams warming up on the field by throwing long passes without missing a beat, we were intimidated. Especially as a younger team competing in a senior division, getting anywhere during a game seemed hopeless.

But as a team, we tried to remember that we were here to have fun and to learn more about the game. Paloma and Sarah reminded us that the other teams were also here for the “spirit of the game”, a concept in ultimate, and that we shouldn’t be afraid to ask other players questions, or give them compliments. So as we watched the first game in our pool, we quickly learned how points were started, how plays were continued, how teams did their individual cheers, and how disputes were settled.

Before long, we ourselves were on the field playing in VISST’s first ever sports game!

During the first two games in our pool, the other teams immediately jumped out to a commanding lead. As they scored point after point, we were forced to do the “walk of shame” back to the other side of the field, over and over again. But we didn’t give up - instead, we were patient with each other and kept focussing on small, simple plays. And in each of those games, against well-established teams in the province (including the current #1 ranked team in BC), we scored a point! Those points did nothing to change the outcome of the game, but it was a huge morale booster and reminder that we were here to learn, but also to have fun.

After each game, we also congratulated each team through their tunnel of hands, and each team awarded a “Player of the Game” to the other side with a bag of candy.

In our final game in the loser bracket, we were made aware that our opponents had also only had a couple of practices. While on the field, we felt like we were able to carry out a lot more of our plays, and make longer series of connected passes. Even though we were younger and smaller, the game was very evenly matched throughout, with points flying back and forth until the game was tied at 9-9.

What a way for VISST to end their first ever sports event! It was a huge first for VISST, a milestone in the school’s journey, and it was an incredibly special experience for all involved. A special thank you to Roni and Yaroslava for pitching the idea of sports teams at VISST last year - we wouldn’t be here without your initiative! Here’s to many more firsts for VISST in the future.

There are only a couple of ways to truly bend a thin flat piece of wood. The first is a long process involving heat and gradual bending around a cylindrical drum. Depending on how long of a piece and how big of a bend, this can take hours, maybe even days.

The other method, is called a living hinge. Without fully separating the pieces of wood into individual slats, you can laser some strategically placed slots to weaken the wood while still keeping intact. This allows for a gentle rounded curve, perfect for wooden books or boxes!

You can find this file for free in xTool studio along with many other wooden box designs.

Remember - to allow for notches to slot in together properly, do not resize the design as the holes should be set for 3mm (0.118”) material thickness. Resizing the design will require going back and ensuring all the slots and notches are still compatible.

Lab Interns Appointed!

Congratulations to Valerie and Tobias for becoming the Maker Lab’s first two lab interns!

As interns, they will be rotating in the lab during lunches and after schools whenever they can to help provide additional support when Thanh is not present. Support could include answering questions about the tools and prepping design files for usage, but also handling minor disruptions to the tools’ operation.

Going Green is Awesome

Did you know that we stockpile our cardboard and other packaging materials for reuse rather than disposal? Students can help themselves to the various materials retained for their own personal projects whether its for cardboard prototyping, containers for project storage, drop sheets for messy glue-ups/painting jobs, or bubble wrap for transporting fragile work.

You Can’t Glue Sand

And by that, we mean if you sand off too much of your 3D prints, there is no reversing and you may have to re-print instead. Make sure to take your time and go in smaller passes so you’re not taking too much material off at a time.

This is especially prevalent with prints that include small stems. If you accidentally notch into it like a beaver chewing into a tree trunk, sadly there is very little that can be done to properly salvage it.

While technically you can attempt a filament weld to melt and deposit more filament, if the area is very difficult to reach you may encounter more challenges and potentially risk burning yourself even more.

Check the Scraps

Before using a brand new sheet of plywood or acrylic, ask yourself if your design can fit on one of the scrap offcuts instead. We have plenty of usable offcuts ready to be used again for medium to smaller jobs.

Gone are the days where you would need to chisel out a perfectly good rubber eraser in order to create a custom stamp. Thanks to the laser cutter, we can laser engrave our own at a fraction of the time using vinyl-free stamping rubber.

This week students can sign up and learn about how to prep a design file properly for their own stamps as well as gain access to the stamp rubber supply.

As we are approaching the final leg of the school year, students are that there will be no more workshops scheduled past May 15th.

Partially because Thanh will be away, but also to give students as much time as they need to get their fill of fabrication before summer hits and the lab will be closed.

During dedicated Free-Making days, makers who wish to catch up on missed workshops from earlier in the year can coordinate a one-on-one with Thanh.

Uneven Stamping?

When it comes to transferring ink off of your stamp and onto your surface, technique is very important. If you are able to put your desired material onto a soft, slightly spongey surface, your stamp will have a better transfer of ink.

If the intended surface is hard, you may have to carefully rock your stamp both side-to-side as well as forward-and-backwards to encourage a little bit of springiness.

Filament Welding

Did your 3D print kind of separate where you didn’t want it to? Rather than reprinting the entire model, you can try to heat up a soldering iron to try to weld your parts back together.

First heat the ends that you are trying to weld together so they’re a bit soft and then using a scrap bit of matching filament, try to melt droplets to help bond them together. Once fully cooled off, sand off the excess and you’re good to go again.

Vinyl Weeding Keeps Sticking Together

Vinyl weeding is already a very time consuming process. It is even more of a hassle when you are pulling away your extracts and they keep clinging onto vinyl it shouldn’t.

Try dividing up your vinyl using small boxes to separate designs or words into smaller manageable sections (or use a knife after you have cut). That way you are pulling smaller pieces of vinyl instead of wrestling a larger bit of offcut.

The students also participated in a fun escape-room type challenge called Transcribe to Survive. This was run by volunteers from Geneskool, an outreach education program by Genome BC. The volunteers included an undergraduate student in microbiology, a newly graduated Biology major, and a masters student who analyzed data on lung cancer. Twice a year, Geneskool organizes field trips to Capilano University for their CSI Mystery, where students do lab work to analyze a “crime scene” and solve a “murder”. The students learned how to determine blood type, use gel electrophoresis to examine specific genes, and observe samples under a foldscope microscope.

The students also participated in a fun escape-room type challenge called Transcribe to Survive. This was run by volunteers from Geneskool, an outreach education program by Genome BC. The volunteers included an undergraduate student in microbiology, a newly graduated Biology major, and a masters student who analyzed data on lung cancer. Another aspect to keep an eye on is the style of AP questions. The next two weeks of review will help accustom students to the style, including multiple choice questions.

That said, I’m very glad we could end the course on differential equations because it brings everything back to the nature of our world. When

from a physics class on springs turns into

from a calculus class on differential equations, and you see why harmonic motion shows up… there is a moment of realization I tried to facilitate for my students, which I hope they found mildly interesting if not eye-opening.

My plan for the final month after the AP exam is for students to do individual calculus-related projects. I have some suggested topics, such as chaos theory or probability or the history of calculus, and I’m sure students will have their own ideas too. And that’ll be it! Though I’ll have the privilege of re-experiencing calculus every year, students, you don’t need to be jealous! You’ll have the privilege of seeing the world through a new lens every year ahead, too.

Pre-designed by xTool, you can find the toolpaths for this project, along with several other 3D puzzle projects, for free through xTool’s Projects.

When it comes to these templates, they are typically designed for 3mm thick material. If resizing the design, you might find that they do not slot into each other correctly as the slots are measured to accommodate 3mm material.

If you need to split the design across multiple pieces of materials because it won’t fit on one, you can always open additional tabs in xTool Studio, ungroup the design, and copy-paste components to separate material panels.

Reverse Weeding for Delicate Vinyls

Finding it challenging to extract smaller details from your vinyls even though it is confirmed to cut all the way through?

Try reverse weeding where you apply transfer tape on top of the vinyl first.

Peel away the backing and place the design back on the mat for stability (transfer tape side down).

Using a sewing needle pick, start extracting as you would with any other material.

Adjust Laser Settings for Effect

When it comes to engravings you do not have to stick with the default engraving value. Instead, experiment with different speed and power combinations to achieve lighter or darker engravings.

Different machines may have different tubes installed and the Watts may differ. Recommend designing cards specific to those machines and not to rely on values intended for a different model.

Students have taken naturally to sharing the floor, taking turns listening and responding to develop or challenge each other’s ideas on texts and guest speakers. It’s no easy undertaking to make room for everybody’s voices and opinions: keeping an open mind, staying conscious of time constraints, and maintaining a handle on both energy and direction is a tall order for any age and group. But as shown by balanced discussion maps like the one below, the Grade 9 class is up to the task.

While our printers only print one colour at a time, you can still have multi-colour projects by mixing and matching the finished components with each other, as tried by Yuval D. who 3D printed an assortment of these Heart Gear keychains.

By essentially 3D printing 6 sets of the keychains, she was able to swap the parts around to give each one a pop of colour that complimented each other.

If 3D printing 6 full sets seems a bit much, you could take the extra step of modifying the models in a 3D modeling program and separate the meshes before print each component individually.

Lab Intern

With the higher volume of usage the lab is experiencing, we are looking for one or two students to step up as Lab Interns who can help support it on days where Thanh is not in.

We hope to announce the appointed intern(s) at the end of the month when they commence their training on advanced techniques not typically covered in our regular safety orientation workshops.

New Workshops Alert

This year we are introducing a 3D Printed USB Shells workshop and the Paper Floral Bouquets workshop to our roster.

For 3D Printed USB Shells you will learn about improved measurement techniques, dimensional prototyping, and engineering concepts to make sure you get a well fitted USB shell to go with your USB drives.

The Paper Floral Bouquet workshop is timed for right before Mother’s Day. Perfect opportunity to produce your own “forever” bouquets by cutting petal patterns on the Cricut and hand assembling them for a unique and custom bouquet of paper flowers.

Check Your Parchment Paper

Before heat pressing, check the condition of your parchment paper. If there is tinting or impressions from past presses, you may want to discard and replace as it will affect your new project.

Triple Check Laser Settings

Just because you assigned an object to a specific colour, doesn’t mean xTool knows to update the intended action. To ensure you are cutting instead of scoring, always reassign and verify your cut settings right before you hit process.

Bag Em Up

3D printer filaments should be returned to their bags when done. Prolonged exposure to air moisture and dust will degrade the filament faster than desired and they may snap during the loading process or worse, during the print process.

Tobias and Verity took us on a historical journey to Beijing, visiting the Great Wall while trying out different Peking duck restaurants. Chris and Valerie shared delicacies in Taipei, including Din Tai Fung at Taipei 101 and food at bustling night markets.

Eric and Marcus planned a trip to Tahiti, where they explored beautiful beaches, clear blue water, and local markets in Papeete. Simone and Niobe took us to Quebec City and shared famous places like “Le Petit Champlain”, Montmorency Falls, and the historic area of Old Quebec. Joshua and Yusuf planned a visit to Lyon, a city known for its great food and history. Their projects showed different cultures and gave the class new travel ideas.

Students worked in their own language groups to create their projects, but one of the most exciting aspects was the opportunity to present their work to the other class. French students shared their itineraries with Mandarin learners, and vice versa. This activity helped students see how language can be used beyond the classroom!

Forms of revelry included music, π-themed games and activities and, of course, lots of pie. In accordance with tradition, both classic (apple, pecan, etc.) and alternative (pizza, chicken pot, etc.) pies made appearances at the event.

Attendees were also audience to an epic typing showdown between Principal Mike and Student Champion Brian, who competed in a contest of speed and proficiency across two events. Stakes were set high, with the loser facing… a pie in the face. Mike and Brian both typed valiantly, each of them winning one of the two events. The crowd had come for a pieing though, and were not satisfied until both Mike and Brian had received their just desserts.

In short: we vied for pie, witnessed a tie, then said goodbye until July April. (My attempt at rhyming with π ~3.14 times.)

Many students participated in organizing Pi Day this year, so thanks to Anushka, Ivan, and the others who helped! As usual, a tip of the hat also goes to VISST teacher Philip, who kicked off the Pi Day tradition at the school, and contributes consistently to making it happen.

Following from our work relating to the Number System we looked at Pascal’s Triangle, which contains all the Natural numbers and a wealth of numerical patterns. Students were introduced to this triangle via a path counting game and enjoyed the hunt for patterns. This however led us to the question of why it is called Pascal’s Triangle. Students were tasked with some research into the history of the triangle, which led to differing opinions as to whether Blaise Pascal deserves all the credit. Al-Karaji’s name was brought up but quickly ruled out and our final class debate was between Pascal, Jia Xian or nobody. After opening speeches, we took a vote and surprisingly no-one voted for Pascal, Jia Xian was the favourite. After the main debate Pascal recovered slightly, gaining 3 votes, but after closing speeches the class overwhelmingly voted for nobody. The students felt that the triangle should be named the Binomial Triangle or something else relating to the mathematics contained within, rather than a person. Throughout the debate the students remained respectful and brought up some excellent points that were well researched and referenced. It was great to hear them discuss possible bias and give space to the ideas of others. They’ve also been hard at work making connections between polynomial expressions and solving equations involving rational numbers and deserve a break. I hope you all have a restful spring break.

The Physics 12 students will also be taking a field trip to the UBC Engineering Physics project lab this Friday, where they will tour the facilities and see the UBC students’ projects on display.
